Firefly rocks!

Meet The Characters

Captain Mal Reynolds

Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds: He owns the starship Serenity. Like Star Trek's Captain Kirk, he is attractive, likable, witty, and eccentric. He thinks that danger is fun. He has no home base, nor any authority that he answers to - not even God. His mother owned a cattle ranch. He was a sergeant in the war against the Alliance, and at one point he commanded over 2000 troops. He still distrusts and avoids the Alliance. Brave, resourceful, tough, adventurous, sometimes quixotic, he's driven by both high ideals, and base motives. He resorts to criminal deeds, but there's a limit to how low he will go. He yearns for Inara, and even fought a duel for her in Shindig. His best friend is Zoe.

Quote: "I'd like to be king of all Londinum and wear a shiny hat."

First Mate Zoe

Zoe Warren: Served with Malcolm in the war and was with him at the disastrous battle of Serenity. She's an expert soldier, absolutely lionhearted, with clear vision and a fierce will. Stoical in battle, she doesn't love danger, she's just not bothered by it. She and Mal were apparently never lovers, but they are very devoted friends. She adores her husband Wash - they are honeymooners. We saw that Zoe and Wash have a loving and erotically satisfying relationship in Shindig, when they stayed behind to play while everyone else went ashore. She is domineering with Wash, which he likes just fine. It seems that everyone aboard likes Zoe. Zoe can easily inspire the others and lead them into battle with confidence, as we saw in War Stories.

Quote: "Sweetie, we're crooks. If everything were right, we'd be in jail."

Pilot Wash

Hoban "Wash" Washburn: Zoe's husband, and Serenity's pilot. He is smart, witty, cheerful and mild-mannered, but not a wimp. He gets along well with everybody, but positively dotes on Zoe. The knowledge that she can break him in half with her bare hands only seems to titillate him. He's a thrillseeker. He told an Alliance interrogator in Bushwacked that the thing he loves best about Zoe is her legs. He's a daring and super-capable pilot, and he's generally dependable, but his first loyalty is to his wife. In Out Of Gas, when Zoe was injured and unconscious, Mal had to nearly knock him on his ass to convince him to leave Zoe's side and man the controls. In War Stories, he acts very jealous about Zoe's bond with Mal, and this creates a crisis.

Quote: "We're doomed! Who's flyin' this thing? Oh... right. That'd be me. Back to work."

Kaylee Frye

Kaylee Frye: Adorable ship's mechanic. She's talented, but not really a proper engineer. Smart but unsophisticated, she grew up learning about engines from her father, and otherwise is apparently self-taught; a savant. She is friendly with everyone, especially with Inara, and incredibly, even with River. She is pining for the handsome Simon. She's very dependable, and is usually sunny and confident. She suffers from no obvious moral qualms when the crew engages in crime. A real trooper. She may seem at times like a tomboy, but she actually loves pretty, feminine things, as we found out in Shindig. In War Stories we learn she is scared of using guns, and that she can't hold her own in a combat situation.

Quote: "Yes sir, Captain Tightpants."

Dr. Simon Tam

Dr. Simon Tam: A fugitive. He once was an Alliance sympathizer, but now that he is living on the lam, he has become a member of Mal's crew. He is unshakably loyal to his peculiar sister, whom he daringly rescued from the sinister Academy. Idealistic and self-sacrificing, we saw that he was willing to die with his sister, in Safe. Incredibly courageous, super-smart, and resourceful, he is more than the ship's highly skilled surgeon: he planned the elaborate caper we saw in Ariel. He's aware that Kaylee has the hots for him, and eventually he encourages her a little, but sexually he's lukewarm. A sensitive, intelligent, and refined gentleman, with a backbone of steel. Unfortunately, he's a poor fighter. He usually gets knocked on his ass when it comes to fighting. In War Stories he behaves bravely but turns out to be a poor shot.

Quote: "This must be what going mad feels like."

River Tam

River Tam: Simon's adored but troubled sister: a super-genius, a psychic, and now a fugitive. She suffered untold torment at the mysterious Academy, where weird experimental surgeries were performed on her for reasons unknown. The Academy's manipulations left her a basketcase; her thoughts and behavior are chaotic. She's not a member of the crew, and worse, she's a burden to everyone, which causes tension. Evil weirdos chasing her kill anyone who admits that they talked to her. She attacked Jayne with a knife in Ariel, which might explain why he decided to (try to) betray the Tams. In War Stories we see her acting friendly with Kaylee, and she proves to be phenomenal with a handgun. In Objects in Space she ingeniously outwits a bounty-hunter who is trying to capture her.

Quote: "No power in the 'verse can stop me."

Jayne Cobb

Jayne Cobb: A mercenary soldier who is strongly, unapologetically motivated by money. He is brave and able, but his loyalty is uncertain. He will do the right thing from time to time, but he always needs a reason. He doesn't have a single gentlemanly bone in his body. Rude and rough. Likes big guns. He tried to betray the Tams for the reward, in Ariel. He doesn't seem too friendly with the rest aboard Serenity, but he does play ball with them, and joins them at the communal meals, so he's not a pariah, either. A whole town erected a statue in his honor, in Jaynestown. He likes women for sex, but doesn't believe in kissing them on the mouth. He does have a softer side: we learn in The Message that he is sending money home to his mother.

Quote: "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eatin' steak!"

Inara Serra

Inara Serra: An elegant and sensual "Companion" (a high-class, highly respected legal call girl). Mal has been known to call her The Ambassador. She is an independent businesswoman who rents one of the shuttles aboard from Malcolm. She can pilot the shuttle herself. Although she will take on either male or female clients, she refuses to "service" Mal or anyone aboard (although she and Mal are strongly attracted to each other, which tortures them both). She is somewhat aloof, but is on good terms with all, especially with Kaylee. Although she is not a member of the crew, she is sometimes extremely helpful in their capers. She told Book that she secretly prays for Mal. When she learned that Mal got laid by another companion in Heart Of Gold, she didn't show her dismay outwardly, but privately she cried her eyes out over it.

Quote: "What I do is legal. And how's that smuggling coming?"

Shepherd (Derriel) Book

Shepherd Book: Shepherd is his title. His first name is not revealed in the show, but in the movie we learn it's Derriel. He's a priest of some type. Quiet, thoughtful, soothing, gentle... he stays out of trouble, pretty much. He got accidently shot in Safe, but he was not involved in the fracus that led to the gunfire. We're not sure if he's really just a passenger, or if there is more to him than meets the eye. He seems to have an interesting and perhaps a troubling history about which he says little. In War Stories, we see that he has leadership skills, and can wield a weapon with confidence. He was treated like a celebrity at the Alliance hospital facility in Safe, but we're not sure why. He does seem loyal to Mal and crew, but we don't know why he would be.

Quote: "I've got heathens aplenty right here."

Firefly theme lyrics

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand

I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me

Take me out to the black
Tell 'em I ain't comin' back

Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me

There's no place I can be
Since I've found Serenity
But you can't take the sky from me...
